Traveling to China in 2017 was a major year for bookstores.
For starters, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East all started enjoying a renaissance.
Many Westerners also felt emboldened to return to their homelands, and some of them were willing to spend more than their fair share on luxury travel.
That’s not to mention the influx of international students, whose numbers have been growing rapidly in recent years.
But the biggest impact on the bookshelves was the rise of e-books, which have become a popular way to consume information online.
The phenomenon has taken off in part because the United Kingdom is no longer home to a major bookstore, and in part for reasons of cost.
The UK’s Royal Mail and the Daily Mail have been gobbling up the country’s publishing industry for years, and they are finally being forced to deal with a market where more people can buy e-readers than books.
The United States is one of the most competitive destinations for e-book purchases, with the number of ebooks in print doubling each year from 2010 to 2020, according to eMarketer.
But bookstores in America have long struggled to compete, particularly as their biggest market.
“The US is a market that is pretty limited,” said Chris Eiseman, author of the book “American Books: The New Global Market.”
That’s because the country is one that, for years after the fall of the Soviet Union, was the most reluctant of all to let foreign books enter its shores.
It’s a country where you could get your hands on some hard-to-find hard-sellers, but those books tended to be classics or historical books.
“There was no sense of openness in America to foreign literature, and I think that’s really helped drive down prices,” Eisman said.
In fact, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) estimates that the average cost of a book sold in the U.S. in 2017 came to $6.30, far below the $9.25 it typically fetches in Europe and the rest of the world.
The rise of bookshels online has also meant that e-reading is more widely available to consumers.
According to a study by the non-profit New America Foundation, nearly half of all Americans now have an e-reader, and an additional 12 percent of people say they read books online at least once a week.
In a country with so many e-commerce options, books are more affordable than ever, especially compared to traditional print.
So what are some of the best books to read online?
According to Eismann, books that are popular on Amazon can be as affordable as books on the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal.
“I’m not sure how to compare Amazon to the rest, because the difference in the prices can be really huge,” he said.
One book that has made a major difference is the novel “Nadine Gordimer.”
The book, which tells the story of the rise and fall of a woman named Nadine, was written and published in 2012 and won the National Book Award for best first novel.
“Nade was the first American woman to be a protagonist in a novel, and she is also one of my favorite writers,” Eidman said, noting that “Nadia” has also been translated into more than 40 languages.
“You know, I’m glad that it was a woman writer who did it, because she was able to write about women who were living in poverty, and her story is a really powerful one,” he added.
In an effort to make sure that she doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, Eisemans book “A Girl in China,” which was released in April 2018, was published with a new cover and title that included the words “A Tale of Two Cities.”
The novel is set in Shanghai, China, in the early 1900s, and it follows Nadine’s journey as she navigates a new world and the pressures of living in a Chinese city.
It won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for best novel and was a finalist for the Pulitzer in history.
“We’re seeing the book market shift away from being limited to just books,” said Eisemaker.
In the future, it’s likely that people will be able to choose from more than one title and read them all.
“They’re going to have a lot more choice than they used to have, and that’s a good thing,” Eisner said.
And that means we can have more stories to read and enjoy.
